Battery Builder Requires Rapid Response for US Navy Project
Situation:
A leading US manufacturer of industrial batteries was in a competitive situation, vying for a contract with the US Navy. They needed two things: First, they needed quick turnaround on a pre-production run of complex stainless steel weldments to be submitted to the Navy for approval. This involved design for manufacturability and production of sample parts on production fixtures and equipment. Secondly, they needed assurance that the parts could be produced with repeatable quality, to Navy specifications and in quantity.
Solution:
Working closely with the client, the Jones Metal Products, Inc. Account
Manager assembled a cross-functional team to tackle this project. The
team consisted of sales, engineering, production, quality and purchasing.
Working closely with the customer, the team was able to quickly provide
samples based on the customer's concept drawings. While JMP engineering
worked out the production drawings, samples were being built in the shop
for weld analysis. JMP quality was coordinating with the customer's quality
staff to establish standards and develop quality plans. At the same time,
engineering was working closely with the operators in welding to work
out a design for the robot fixtures as well as programs for the robot.
During production of initial sample orders customer Quality personnel
performed a successful on site audit.
Result:
In just under six weeks from initial contact to delivery of pre-production sample parts, the Jones Metal Products, Inc. team produced a complete solution for the customer, meeting all criteria for cost, quality and delivery to technical specification. The client was able to meet their commitment, delivering pre-production sample product to the Navy for test and evaluation.
